LAVA is a troupe of women who develop and perform artistic works that combine dance, theater, and acrobatics. LAVA develops original works that integrate athletic physicality, intellectual rigor, social commentary, and relationship exploration.
Sarah East Johnson founded LAVA in 2000 but has been choreographing since 1994. Her background in dance, circus and geology informs the unique productions by LAVA which have won her both an Obie Award and a Bessie Award for choreography and direction. Her artistic vision is founded in a desire to create original work for a company of strong and daring women that has both an immediate appeal to audiences and a politically motivated urgency. Volcano Love Inc. produces LAVA shows and teaches acrobatics to kids and adults, especially girls and women, to offer the joy and empowerment of physical strength to all who are inspired to work with LAVA.
